The decode: what to check first, and what the months have cost

The first thing to establish, and it costs nothing: whether the institution holds a copy. Machines issued for academic work are frequently backed up centrally, or configured to synchronise the user's folders to institutional storage — and a great many losses of this kind are resolved by asking.

Why that is worth doing before anything technical: a central copy would be complete and current, which no recovery from a used machine can promise. It also costs a message rather than a fee.

What the honest position is: poor after months of use, and not nil. Partial recovery of some files is a realistic expectation and complete recovery of all of them is not, which should be said before rather than after.

What must happen now regardless: the machine out of use immediately. Every further hour reduces what remains, and it is the only variable still available.
