There is a very clear division, and it is worth knowing before spending money. Ordinary data recovery: a wallet file on a failed, formatted or wiped disk. Loss of a seed phrase or a forgotten password is not a recovery problem but a cryptographic fact, and can't be changed by any lab.
Seed phrases aren't passwords that are stored somewhere for retrieval. They are the maths that defines the wallet itself. If you don't have the phrase and also do not have the wallet file, the coins remain on the blockchain but forever inaccessible. Any company claiming differently isn't describing something that actually exists.
This is the clearest line on this website and it's good to say it first.
What is recoverable: a wallet file which has been deleted, sitting on a failed or formatted hard-drive, or on media that is no longer accessible. That's ordinary data recovery applied to a specific file – wallet.dat, keystore files, an exported private-key or an encrypted vault which you still have access to via your password.
What is not: a lost seed phrase, lost wallet password, a hardware wallet PIN or sending coins to the wrong address. None of these are "recovery" issues. These are all just facts about cryptography; there is no lab, device or any amount of money that can alter them.
There is considerable variation in prospects and the diagnostic establishes which type applies before you agree to any commitment.
Practical considerations of how we go about performing our work. These are often more important than they are on other jobs we complete.
We create an exact copy of the drive you provide us, working read-only. Once created, we perform all operations against the copy of the drive rather than against the original drive. When looking for wallet files, keystores, etc., we look for them based upon their file signatures and names throughout the entire copy including areas of unallocated space. Once located, we transfer those items back to you on newly encrypted media.
We will be working for you, but we never take possession or control of your coins. We do not require access to your wallet or need to know what it contains, nor do we want to. Once we deliver the file back into your hands, our involvement will end. We sign NDAs as standard; thus, all of the information provided by our clients is strictly confidential. Because we price this work based upon its nature – that being a recovery project – as opposed to pricing it as a "percentage" of the recovered item(s), we have no reason to act contrary to your interests.

It does matter. If we were paid based on a percentage of your wallet contents, then we would also be interested in its value. And we'd be financially rewarded for getting you to think recovery was possible, even when it wasn't. With a flat rate pricing model we remove both of those incentives, so during the free diagnostic, the answers given to you about whether or not any of the money stored in your wallet is recoverable are always honest, and where a seed phrase has been lost, that honest answer is that there is nothing that can be done.

It works on short, reused or partly-recalled passwords and fails against a long random one. A percentage-based compensation structure would create a conflict of interest: it would give us an interest in your wallet's value and in you believing that recovery may be possible, regardless of whether it actually is.
