Your encryption key almost certainly exists. University-issued machines are routinely BitLocker or FileVault encrypted, and students frequently do not know a recovery key was ever created. It usually was — escrowed to Azure AD, Intune or the domain, and retrievable by IT in a couple of minutes. Ask them before assuming the worst, because without it nobody opens the volume and with it the encryption is no obstacle at all.
Check every other copy first. OneDrive and Google Drive version history, a supervisor who was emailed a draft, a departmental share, the machine in the lab you worked on last term.
