Formatting the Destination During a Backup Loses Only What Was Already on It

His enquiry describes a mistake made in the middle of doing the right thing. Backing up a laptop drive to an external one, where he "accidentally formatted the external one in the process" — with nearly 300GB already on it. The laptop is untouched, so the question is narrower than it feels: what was on the external drive that exists nowhere else.

The decode: what the format did, and what to establish first

What a format writes on a drive of this kind: a fresh empty index and a note that the capacity is available. It is a small operation touching a small area at the start of the drive, and it does not visit the regions holding content.

Why the 300GB is therefore still present: nothing erased it. The files sit exactly where they were written, unreferenced by an index that no longer describes them.

Why this is the favourable version of the mistake: on a spinning drive a format is among the most recoverable losses there is. There is no background erasure of the kind a solid-state drive performs, so time alone does not reduce what remains.

What determines the outcome instead: whether the backup then proceeded. If the operation continued and started writing the laptop's content onto the freshly formatted drive, it wrote into precisely the space the old content occupies.

Why that is the first thing to establish: a format followed by nothing leaves everything; a format followed by 200GB of backup leaves considerably less. The question is not the format but what came after it.

Why the order of writing matters: a freshly formatted drive is filled from the beginning. New content lands on the oldest regions first, so what survives is generally whatever sat furthest into the drive.

What narrows the job considerably: the laptop still holds its own content. Anything on the external drive that was a copy of laptop material does not need recovering at all, and only material unique to the external drive matters.

Why that is worth working out before committing to anything: a backup destination frequently holds copies rather than originals. The genuinely unique content may be a small fraction of the 300GB, and knowing which folders those are shapes the recovery.

Why he should not attempt to complete the backup: the instinct is to carry on and at least secure the laptop. Doing so on the same external drive destroys what the format left — a second drive should be used for that.

What must not happen: nothing further written to the external drive, and no attempt to restore anything onto it. It should be disconnected and left alone until it is read.
