A Maxtor that crashed and afterwards showed no files at all. Disk Management offered to initialise it as MBR or GPT. The client suspected that would destroy something, closed the dialogue and rang instead — which is the single best decision anyone in these case files made.
The drive crashed and needed a manual restart. Afterwards Windows detected the device but showed no volume — nothing in This PC, and in Disk Management a dialogue: “You must initialize a disk before Logical Disk Manager can access it”, offering MBR or GPT and an OK button.
The client looked at that, thought it sounded destructive, cancelled it, and called. Everything below follows from that decision.
Windows is not asking permission to read the disk. It is offering to write a new partition structure onto it, because it cannot find the existing one.
The distinction matters enormously. A drive showing this prompt has usually lost a few hundred bytes at its very start — the table describing where volumes begin and end. Everything else, every file, is exactly where it always was. The operating system has no map, concludes the disk is unused, and helpfully offers to set one up.
Click OK and it writes that new structure over the old. The data underneath remains physically present, but the record of how it was arranged has been replaced by a record of an empty disk. Recovery is still possible afterwards and it is materially harder, because the structure that would have been rebuilt is the structure that just got overwritten.
If somebody is going to click it, the choice matters, and not in the direction most people assume.
MBR writes a single 512-byte structure at the very start of the disk. Damaging, and confined to one small region at one end.
GPT writes in two places. A protective record and the primary header at the start, the partition entry array immediately after it — and then a complete backup copy of that header and array at the very end of the disk.
The end of the disk is not empty space. It is where file systems keep their own spare copies of critical structures precisely so that damage at the front is survivable: NTFS places a duplicate of its boot sector in the last sector of the volume, and Linux file systems scatter backup superblocks well away from the primary.
So initialising as GPT can destroy both the original map and the spare that would have been used to rebuild it. Neither option should be clicked — but if it has already happened, tell us which was chosen, because it changes what we expect to find and how long the job takes.
The drive was imaged read-only first, gently and completely. It was an elderly ATA disk of a generation where a full read is not something to assume you can repeat, so the imaging plan allowed for one pass with conservative timeouts.
The partition structure was then rebuilt from the image rather than searched for by trial. Because nothing had been written over the disk, the volume announced itself: the file system’s own boot sector was intact and its duplicate at the end of the volume was intact, and the two agreed on the same geometry — volume start, length, cluster size and the location of the file table.
Two independent structures giving the same answer is a proof rather than an estimate, and from those figures a correct partition entry follows directly, because they are the same numbers the entry is supposed to contain.
That is why the folder structure and filenames came back exactly as they had been, rather than as a mass of numbered files.
About 99%, with the directory structure preserved, returned on modern media in four days.
Had the client clicked OK this would still have been recoverable — but as carved files without names or folders, which on a drive holding years of documents is a substantially worse outcome and a much longer job. A single cancelled dialogue was the entire difference.
So: that prompt does not mean your disk is empty. It means Windows cannot find a partition table and is offering to write a new one over the top. Cancel it, unplug the drive, and get it looked at. Single drives are from £300 +VAT after a free 48-hour diagnostic.
