It could not describe its own size.

Windows saw a device reporting 32 MB, a garbled model string, and a prompt to format it. The drive was a healthy one-terabyte disk that had lost the ability to describe itself — and formatting was the one irreversible act available.

What arrived

A recruitment business kept candidate records and correspondence on a secondary drive in a desktop machine. After an unexpected power cut the drive still appeared in Windows — as a 32 MB volume, with a nonsense model name, and with a prompt to format it.

Nobody accepted. That single decision is why this recovered completely.

The part of a hard drive you cannot address

Every hard drive reserves space for itself that no operating system can reach. It sits outside the addressable range presented to the host — on tracks the drive knows about and the computer does not — and it holds everything the drive needs to function as a drive.

That reserved area is organised as numbered modules. Among them are the firmware the controller executes, the zone tables describing how sectors are laid out across the platters, the two defect lists, the SMART history, the adaptive calibration values for this particular head stack, and the module declaring how large the drive is.

The drive reads all of this at spin-up, before it will answer a single question about your data. A drive that cannot assemble a coherent picture of itself does not fail gracefully into a smaller version of itself — it reports whatever its firmware falls back to, which is where the nonsense figures come from.

The translator, and why it is the critical module

The most important structure in that reserved area is the translator, and it is worth understanding because it explains the entire fault.

Your computer asks for logical block 8,431,905. There is no such thing on the platters. The physical reality is a particular surface, a particular track and a particular sector on that track, and the mapping between the two is neither simple nor uniform — outer tracks hold more sectors than inner ones, and every sector the factory found defective, plus every sector reallocated since, has been skipped and the numbering shuffled along behind it.

The translator holds that mapping. It is built from the zone tables plus both defect lists: the P-list of defects found at manufacture, and the G-list of sectors that have gone bad in service. Damage it and the drive cannot convert a request into a location. It does not know where anything is, including where its own capacity declaration should point, so it presents an address space it cannot honour — and reports something meaningless rather than something wrong.

What gets reported varies by manufacturer and by firmware family: some drives show zero capacity, some a blank model string, some a small nonsensical figure. None of it reflects the platters, which in this case were carrying a terabyte of entirely intact data throughout.

Repair, not replacement

Access was established through the manufacturer’s diagnostic mode and the reserved area read directly.

The capacity modules were repaired first, since nothing else can be verified while the drive misreports its own size. The translator was then regenerated from the surviving structures — the zone tables and defect lists that build it were largely intact, which meant it could be rebuilt rather than replaced.

That distinction matters more than any other decision on this job. A translator taken from a donor drive describes that drive’s physical layout, including its defect lists. Two drives of the same model, the same capacity and the same firmware revision have different defects in different places, so their translators disagree about where every sector after the first defect physically lives. Fitting a donor translator produces a drive that enumerates correctly, reads confidently, and returns data from the wrong locations — which is considerably harder to detect than a drive that fails outright.

Once the drive enumerated at its true capacity, it was imaged read-only immediately. A repaired service area is not a permanent state, and the assumption throughout was one good opportunity.

Verification

The NTFS volume mounted from the image cleanly and its master file table validated against its mirror. Candidate databases were checked for structural consistency rather than merely copied, correspondence folders reconciled against what the business expected to find, and the whole set returned on fresh media.

Outcome

Complete. And the reason is worth stating plainly, because the prompt that appeared on screen is the most dangerous thing about this failure mode.

Formatting a drive whose translator is broken does not fail harmlessly. The format writes a new file system using the drive’s current, incorrect address mapping — scattering new structures across physical locations that have no relationship to where the operating system believes they are going. That damage lands on a mechanically perfect disk, in a pattern nobody can predict, and undoing it afterwards is far harder than repairing the original fault would have been.

So: a drive reporting an absurd capacity has a firmware problem, not a storage problem. Decline the prompt, power it down, and have the service area repaired. Single drives are from £300 +VAT after a free 48-hour diagnostic.
