Not Knowing Which Operation Was Used Does Not Change What to Do Next
Her enquiry has an unusual gap in it. A camera passed to others at an event, where "at some point someone has accidentally erased all the photos" — and nobody can say whether they were deleted individually, erased as a batch, or the card was formatted. The three differ technically and not practically: all leave the images in place, all are ended by the same thing, and the correct next action is identical for each.

The decode: three possible operations, one identical answer
What deleting images individually does: removes each entry and marks its space available. The photographs stay exactly where they were written, unreferenced.
What a batch erase does: the same thing, faster. It clears many entries in one operation rather than one at a time, and it does not touch the image data either.
What an in-camera format does: writes a fresh empty index and marks the whole capacity available. It is a small operation touching a small area and it does not visit the regions holding photographs.
Why the three are practically identical here: all remove the description and none removes the content. The images sit in the same places under all three, and they are recovered the same way.
Why that means the uncertainty costs nothing: the advice does not branch. Stop using the card, do not photograph anything else, and have it read — which would be the answer whichever operation was performed.
Why it is worth saying plainly: not knowing what happened feels like an obstacle, and people delay while trying to find out. The delay is the only part that costs anything, because the card remains in a camera meanwhile.
What actually ends recoverability: new photographs. Cameras fill from the front, so the first frames taken after the erasure land directly on the earliest of the missing images.
Why that matters especially at an event: if the camera continued to be used afterwards, some images will have been displaced. Establishing whether anyone photographed anything after the erasure is the one question worth asking — and it is the only detail from the evening that changes the outcome.
Why images recover well from any of the three: photographs carry recognisable openings identifying their format, and a card filled sequentially holds them in long continuous runs. They are located by searching the content directly, without any index.
What will not come back: the original filenames and folder arrangement, in the format case. Recovered images generally arrive with generated names in the order found, which is worth expecting rather than being surprised by.
