When the Contacts Themselves Are Gone, the Route In Has to Be Made Elsewhere
This enquiry is made on behalf of a son whose photographs matter a great deal to him. A memory card whose "connector pins have broken off" inside a games console — the console since repaired, the card not. This is the severe end of a family of card damage: a cracked card can often still be read, but a card with no contact surfaces has nothing for a reader to meet at all.

The decode: why this is different from a cracked card, and what remains
What the contacts are: the entire electrical interface. Every signal into and out of the card passes through those exposed pads, and there is no alternative connector anywhere on the device.
Why their loss is more serious than a break elsewhere: other damage leaves a route in. A cracked body, a missing shell or a broken edge all still present contacts a reader or a fixture can meet — this does not.
Why the memory is nevertheless very likely intact: the pads sit at one end and the memory package sits within the assembly. Force applied at the contacts does not reach the component holding the content, which is why prospects remain reasonable.
What the first approach is: finding where the traces from those missing pads still run. Each contact connects to a path on the internal board, and where enough of that path survives, a connection can be made to it directly.
Why that is worth attempting before anything more invasive: it restores ordinary communication. A card reconnected that way reads through its own controller, which returns content in its original arrangement.
What is done where the traces did not survive: the memory package is read at chip level, bypassing the controller entirely. The arrangement is then reconstructed from the data itself, which does not require any part of the card's interface to exist.
Why the console being repaired is relevant: the pins may still be inside it, and the slot may hold fragments. Anything retained from that repair is worth keeping, though it rarely changes the approach.
Why the card must not be inserted anywhere: forcing a card with damaged contacts into a slot can bend the assembly and fracture the internal traces. Those traces are the cheaper route, and pressing the card into a reader is how they are lost.
How it should be kept meanwhile: flat, dry, supported and not loose. The assembly is now unprotected at one end, and further handling damage is the avoidable risk.
What the honest position is: this is chip-level work rather than a straightforward read, with a good chance of a complete result. The severity is at the interface and the content sits behind it.
