Her enquiry describes a sequence rather than a symptom, which is more useful than she may realise. The decode: what each stage was, and why the order matters

What the first state established: the directory was readable. Folders listing means the structures describing them returned data, so at that point the drive was delivering the information required to enumerate contents.

What the second state added: the listing survived and the contents did not. Opening a folder reads a further structure describing what is inside it — so the outer level read and the inner level did not.

Why the message she saw fits that: a system unable to read a folder's contents reports the folder as unreachable or removed. It describes a failed read in the language of a missing item, which is misleading and standard.

What the third state means: the outer level stopped reading too. The structures that had been returning data at the first attempt no longer did, so the folders vanished from the listing entirely.

Why that ordering is the important finding: the drive was not in a fixed condition. It got worse between one attempt and the next, which is the signature of a degrading device rather than a static structural fault.

Why carving runs alongside rather than instead: if the directory cannot be rebuilt, photographs and video are located by their own openings without it. The arrangement may be lost where the content is not, and both routes are pursued from the same image.
