Light Inside the Case Means Power Reached the Board the Front Panel Did Not

His enquiry contains an observation almost nobody thinks to make. An external drive no longer recognised, where "the main light no longer lights up, though when connected to power there is some light emitting from within the casing." Those two facts point in opposite directions, and together they place the fault more precisely than either could alone.

The decode: what each light is connected to

What the front indicator normally reports: the enclosure's own view of its state. It is driven by the bridge board — the circuitry that converts between the drive's interface and the connection to the computer — and it lights when that board considers itself powered and functioning.

What internal illumination usually is: a component indicator on the bridge board itself, or on the drive. Small indicators of that kind exist for diagnostic purposes and are visible only through gaps in the casing.

Why the combination is informative: power is reaching the board and the board is not driving its front indicator. That separates the supply from the logic — electricity arrives and something downstream is not doing its job.

Why that is more useful than a wholly dark enclosure: a dead front light on its own could mean no power at all. Internal light rules that out, so the cable, the mains adapter and the supply path are all working.

What it points at instead: the bridge board. A board partly powered but not operating correctly fails to drive its indicator and fails to present the drive, which accounts for both symptoms with one fault.

Why that would be a good outcome: the drive inside is not implicated. An enclosure whose conversion circuitry has failed leaves the drive untouched, and removing it resolves the problem entirely.

Why that must nevertheless be tested rather than assumed: a drive drawing incorrectly can prevent a board initialising. The board might be failing because of the drive rather than independently, and the two are separated by powering the drive on its own.

What that test establishes in minutes: whether the drive spins, draws correctly and enumerates when supplied directly. A drive that behaves normally on a controlled supply confirms the enclosure as the fault.

Why removing the drive is the right step regardless: even where the enclosure is at fault, the content is reached by reading the drive rather than by repairing the housing. The enclosure is not worth restoring.

What must not happen: no further attempts through the enclosure, and no substitute mains adapter of unverified rating. If the board has failed, an incorrect supply would carry the fault to the drive.
