Silent and undetected, spinning but invisible, clicking, or detected with nothing on it — these have almost nothing in common except the word people use for them. Two are among the more recoverable faults we handle.
Most drives people describe as dead are electrically dead and mechanically untouched. The data is entirely intact and simply unreachable, which is a far better position than it sounds.
Thirty seconds of observation, and it changes everything that follows.

Sounds perfectly healthy and reports zero capacity or a blank model. The service area holding the drive’s own firmware has become unreadable, and the user data is almost always intact behind it.
Mechanical. Deteriorating every minute it runs, and the only category where speed genuinely matters. Power it off.
Nothing is physically wrong. A lost partition, a damaged file system, a formatted volume — the map is broken rather than the data.
The single most misread symptom in data loss.
A drive that does absolutely nothing feels like the worst outcome. In practice it is frequently the best, because the circuit board is designed to fail first — most drives include a TVS protection diode intended to short and sacrifice itself if the supply spikes, precisely so the surge never reaches the mechanism.
When that happens the drive draws no power and does nothing at all, while the platters, the heads and every byte of your data remain exactly as they were. The repair is board-level: a matching donor board with the original ROM chip transplanted across, because modern drives store calibration values unique to each individual unit in that chip.
The one thing that turns this from good to bad is repeated attempts. Powering a drive with a shorted board over and over is how a contained electrical fault reaches the motor.
So you are not paying anyone to discover them.
Severely scored platters. Where heads have removed the magnetic coating, that band holds nothing. Undamaged areas of the same platter usually image normally, so the result is a partial recovery with the missing files named individually.
Overwritten data. Once something has been written over your file, that portion is gone. There is no residual magnetic trace to read back on any drive made in the last twenty years.
Encryption without the key. A perfectly imaged drive yields nothing readable. Where the key is lost we can attempt password recovery, which works on weak or partly-remembered passwords and not against a long random one.

Frequently, and silence is often encouraging. A drive that does nothing at all usually has a failed circuit board rather than a failed mechanism — and the board is designed to fail first, sacrificing a protection diode so a surge never reaches the platters.
Usually firmware. Drives load their operating code from a reserved service area on the platters, and if a module becomes unreadable the drive cannot describe itself — so it reports nothing while sounding perfectly healthy. The data is generally untouched.
Not on anything made in the last twenty years. Each drive is calibrated individually and those values live in a ROM chip on its own board, so a donor board without that chip transplanted across either will not initialise or drives the heads with the wrong calibration.
No. Once a drive has failed to spin or shown a burnt smell, repeated attempts risk pushing a fault that was contained on the board through into the motor or heads. Stop after the first failure.
Generally yes. Clicking means the mechanism and it deteriorates every minute it runs. Silence usually means electronics, which does not deteriorate at all — a dead drive in a drawer is not getting worse.
