Behaves like any other deletion. On a spinning disk you may have weeks; on an SSD, minutes. Check the Recycle Bin and Previous Versions before anything else.
iCloud Photos, Google Photos and OneDrive all keep deleted items in a Recently Deleted area for 30 to 60 days. Free, instant, and it resolves a real share of these.
We do not recover from phones, and modern handsets are encrypted in a way that makes third-party recovery impractical. The realistic route is the cloud account or a backup.
Worth knowing before you decide whether it is worth doing.
Where the index survives, photographs come back with their names and folder structure intact. Where it does not — after a format, or serious corruption — images are carved out by signature instead: the card or disk is scanned for the byte patterns that begin JPEG, HEIC, CR2, CR3, NEF, ARW, RAF and DNG, and each file reconstructed from its header outward.
Carving works well on photographs because the formats are large, structured and distinctive. What it cannot return is the filename or the folder, because those lived in the index that has gone.
The saving grace is EXIF. Capture date, camera body, lens and settings all travel inside the image file itself, so a carved set sorts back into shooting order even when every file comes back numbered. In practice that means a holiday or a wedding reassembles chronologically, which is usually what actually matters.
The characteristic failure, and it is more informative than it looks.
A JPEG that displays the top third and then dissolves into grey or coloured blocks has been partly overwritten, or sits across a damaged region. Because these formats decode sequentially, everything before the damage renders correctly and everything after it cannot — which is why the failure looks like a curtain coming down rather than random speckling.
Some of that is repairable. Where the damage is in the file’s structure rather than the image data, the structure can be rebuilt using another photograph taken on the same camera as a reference. Where the image data itself is gone, it is gone — and we return the partial rather than discarding it, because half a photograph of something irreplaceable is generally worth having.
