His enquiry describes a common mistake and an uncommonly good response. Attempting to download images from a camera card onto a tablet, finding insufficient space, deleting images to make room and "somehow managing to delete the new images" instead — and then: "I've not used the card since." The decode: why his response was the right one, and what it preserved
What deletion actually does: removes the entry describing where an image sits and marks that space as available for reuse. The photograph itself is not erased and remains exactly where it was written.
What ends that, and it is the only thing that does: something else being written into the same space. Until that happens the content is intact and completely recoverable, regardless of how long ago the deletion occurred.
