That Error Reports a Value the System Could Not Make Sense Of

Her enquiry names an error precisely, which is what makes it workable. A drive holding years of work that was functioning normally, left connected while she was away, and which on her return reported that "the parameter is incorrect" and is now described as corrupted. That message is not a general failure notice: it means the system read something and found a value it could not accept.

The decode: what that specific message means, and why it is encouraging

What the system was doing when it produced it: reading the structures that describe the volume. Those contain numbers — sizes, counts, offsets, cluster values — that must fall within defined ranges.

What the message reports: one of them did not. The system read a value, checked it, found it outside the permissible range, and refused to proceed — which is a rejection rather than a failure to read.

Why that distinction is genuinely encouraging: data came back. The drive returned the structures when asked, which means it is reading — very different from a device that answers nothing.

Why the system then calls the drive corrupted: it has no better word. A volume it cannot interpret is reported as corrupt regardless of why, and the description tells her nothing about the extent.

What is likely to be wrong: a small structure at the volume's start. The record describing the filesystem's own geometry is a few hundred bytes, and a handful of bad values in it makes the whole volume unreadable.

Why that is such a favourable proportion: her documents and photographs occupy the overwhelming majority of the drive. None of it is implicated by a bad value in a header.

Why filesystems keep a second copy of that record, and why it matters here: it is duplicated elsewhere on the volume precisely because losing it is fatal. Where the duplicate survives, the volume is reconstructed from it, and everything returns in its original arrangement.

What being left connected may have contributed: an extended period powered, possibly with host activity, and possibly an interrupted write. A structure damaged mid-write is exactly the way invalid values arise, and it is consistent with a drive that was fine the day before.

Why no repair must be run: the system's own check would resolve the contradiction by rewriting the structure. It would replace the record we intend to reconstruct, and on a volume with any unreadable regions it discards references it cannot reconcile.

What must not happen meanwhile: no reconnecting to see whether it has improved, and no accepting any offer to fix or format. The error is stable and looking again will not change it.
