A red light is the unit's own verdict, and after an uncontrolled power loss it may be describing the unit, the volume, or the drive — three quite different situations.

The decode: three things a red light can mean after a power cut

The first — the unit itself. An abrupt power loss can damage a supply component in the enclosure. A unit that will not start may have failed at its own power stage, with everything inside it perfectly well.

The second — the volume. A power cut during writing leaves filesystem structures half-updated. The unit reads the volume on start-up, finds it inconsistent, and reports a fault — which is a statement about the data arrangement rather than the hardware.

The third — the drive. Uncontrolled power removal is the event that damages drives. A drive powered down mid-operation can be left with a fault of its own, and the red light would report that too.

Why the indicator cannot distinguish them: it has one state for a wide range of conditions. Fault is what the unit says when it cannot proceed, without indicating which stage it stopped at.

Why removing the drive was a reasonable next step: it separates the first possibility from the others. A drive that reads normally in an adapter would have proved the enclosure was at fault, and he was right to try.

Why the adapter result is less conclusive than it appears, and this is the important part: a network unit writes its volume in a format ordinary computers do not recognise. The drive can present perfectly and still show nothing usable, because the host cannot interpret what it finds.

Why that distinction has to be drawn carefully: not presenting at all and presenting unreadably look similar from the user's side. The first is a drive fault; the second is a format the computer does not speak — and only the first is bad news.

What must not have happened during that test: any offer to initialise or format being accepted. A machine shown an unrecognised volume proposes preparing it, and on a network drive that prompt appears every time.

How the question is actually settled: the drive is assessed independently on a controlled supply with current draw observed, which establishes whether it functions, and then imaged. The native volume is interpreted from the image, with the right tools rather than by any general-purpose host.

Why the outlook is reasonable: two of the three possibilities leave the drive healthy, and the third is often confined to structures rather than the recording. Power-cut damage to a volume is among the more reconstructible faults, because filesystems keep duplicate copies of the records that get damaged.
