A Working Machine With a Dead Display Is Still a Working Machine

A machine that powers on is doing a great deal — and if the display is the only failed part, the content can often be reached without opening anything.

The decode: what powering on establishes, and the cheaper routes it opens
What turning on actually demonstrates: a great deal. The power circuitry works, the main board runs, the processor executes and the system starts — and on most machines the storage is being read successfully throughout that.
Why that makes the display the likely single failure: everything else is evidently functioning. Liquid frequently reaches the display connector or the panel while leaving the board's core intact, which is a common and comparatively minor outcome.
The first thing to try, and it costs nothing: an external display. A laptop with a failed panel usually drives an external screen normally, and if it does, the machine is simply usable and the content copies off in the ordinary way.
The second, where the platform supports it: connecting the machine to another computer so it presents its storage as an external device. That requires no display at all and returns content without any disassembly.
Why either route is preferable to removing the drive: the machine reads its own storage with its own configuration. Content arrives decrypted and arranged as it always was, which no extraction method matches.
Why that matters more than it used to: on many machines the storage is soldered to the board and encrypted against a component on it.
