Disk Drill is one of the better-known recovery applications and people search for it by name. But the useful question is not which tool is best — it is whether software can address your situation at all, because on a large share of cases none can.

Two operations. That is the whole category.

Understanding this makes the differences between products far less mysterious.

Every recovery application, free or paid, is doing one or both of two things.

Reading file system structures. Where the index survives — a deleted file, a lost partition — the tool reads what remains and rebuilds the map. This returns your files with original names and folder structure, and it is the better outcome.

Carving by signature. Where the index is gone, the tool scans the raw disk for byte patterns that begin known file types — JPEG, DOCX, PDF, MP4 — and reconstructs each from its header outward. This returns contents without names or folders, because those lived in the index.

Reputable tools differ in how many signatures they recognise, how well they handle APFS containers or LVM pools, and how good the interface is. They do not differ in physics.

Does it preview before payment?

The important one. You should be able to scan and see your files listed — ideally open a sample — before spending anything. A tool asking you to pay first is asking you to gamble on an unknown.

Scanning and carving are read operations. Anything offering to repair, fix or rebuild the drive is writing to it, and on a damaged volume that destroys what a recovery would use.

Being able to run from a USB stick without installing avoids the commonest self-inflicted failure — the installer writing into the free space holding your deleted files.

APFS containers, LVM thin pools and XFS all break tools that assume a simple partition with NTFS or ext4 inside.

Worth establishing before working through a list of downloads.

Mechanical faults. Clicking, grinding, a drive that will not spin. Software cannot repair hardware, and a deep scan is hours of continuous reading on a drive that may not survive it. Drives regularly die partway through a scan intended to save them.

Drives the computer cannot see. If it is absent from Disk Management or Disk Utility, there is nothing for any tool to read.

TRIMmed SSD deletions. The blocks have been physically erased by the controller. No software recovers them.

Encryption without the key. The volume is unreadable regardless of the tool.

Because we would rather say so than take the work.

Recently deleted files on a healthy drive, a lost or damaged partition on sound hardware, and a quick-formatted card or stick. In all three the storage is mechanically fine and only the map is broken — which is precisely what these tools are built for, and they frequently succeed first time.

Two rules if you try: install the software to a different physical drive than the one you are recovering, and recover to a third location. Breaking either can overwrite the files you are trying to retrieve.

And on a Mac, check for an APFS snapshot before buying anything — Time Machine leaves hourly local snapshots on the internal disk, and restoring one is free. Where software genuinely cannot help, single drives in Manchester are from £300 +VAT after a free 48-hour diagnostic, and if the diagnostic shows a tool would have done it, we say so.
