A Reset Should Not Reach a Removable Card, So Something Else Connects Them
Her enquiry reports two things happening together and assumes one caused the other. A memory card corrupted "after my tablet tried to do a factory reset for no reason", with photographs lost. A factory reset restores the device's own storage and does not ordinarily touch a removable card — so either the reset offered to include it, or both events share a cause that has not been identified.

The decode: three explanations, and why the response is the same
What a factory reset normally does: returns the device's internal storage to its delivered state. It removes accounts, applications and settings from the tablet itself, and a removable card is treated as separate storage.
Why that makes her assumption worth testing: a reset that stayed within its normal scope should have left the card untouched. The card being affected suggests either a wider operation or an unrelated fault.
The first explanation — the reset included the card. Many devices offer to erase removable storage as part of a reset, sometimes as a checked option. A reset that proceeded without her choosing it may equally have proceeded with that option already set.
The second — the card was already failing, and the reset is the symptom rather than the cause. A device that cannot read its own storage reliably can behave erratically, and an unprompted reset is erratic behaviour. A failing card can make a tablet unstable, which reverses the direction she has assumed.
The third — both follow from a common fault in the tablet. Storage problems on the device's internal memory can produce both spontaneous resets and failures to read attached media. The card may be entirely healthy and simply unreadable by a device that is not.
Why the third is worth checking first, and costs nothing: the card can be read on a computer. A card that mounts normally elsewhere exonerates itself and implicates the tablet, which would change the whole picture.
Why the response is identical under all three: the card comes out and stays out. If it was erased, the content remains pending overwriting; if it is failing, further use accelerates it; if the tablet is at fault, the tablet must not touch it again.
Why erasure is the recoverable case: a reset that cleared the card removed the index rather than the content. Photographs remain where they were written until something writes over them, and nothing has.
Why images recover well from that state: they carry recognisable openings and a card filled by a device sits in long continuous runs. They are located by searching the content directly, with no index required.
What must not happen: no returning the card to the tablet, and no accepting any offer to format or repair it. The device that is implicated in this is the one that will make both offers.
