A Device That Names the File Type Has Read Further Than One Offering to Format
Her enquiry reports the same card described differently by two machines on the same day. A laptop that "suggests I format the card", and a camera that says "unable to playback image" — after a wedding shoot. Those messages are not equally informative: one says a volume could not be interpreted, and the other says an image file was found and could not be decoded, which is a great deal further in.

The decode: which message says more, and what follows for the shoot
What the laptop's message means: it could not interpret a filesystem. A prompt to format is what a system offers when it finds a volume it cannot read, and it stops at that point without examining anything further.
